(1596) Magini, Giovanni Antonio. America. In Geographiae Vniversae. Venice. This map: 1st state, 2nd Italian edition (1598). Size: 135 x 175 mm. Language: Italian. Region: Western Hemisphere. Medium: copperplate. Comments: Italian editions of this map appeared in 1596, 1598, 1621, 1679-83 (recut), and 1713 (recut). Pirated editions appeared in northern Europe beginning in 1597 but were different plates. Part 2 of the 1598 and 1621 editions are dated 1597 and 1620, respectively, but are not separate editions. Burden (1996) lists a 1616 Italian edition but that was apparently derived from a cataloging error at Harvard. Source: Hedges (2006) and appendix. |
